The approximately $1 billion renewable energy park will combine solar energy generation and battery energy storage while preserving hundreds of acres of open space at the former Remington Arms ammunition manufacturing and testing site. The project represents a remarkable transformation of a historically industrial property into a source of clean energy, conservation, education, and long-term public benefit.

News 12 Connecticut recently received a rare look inside the approximately 400-acre property, which sits along the Bridgeport-Stratford border. For generations, the site was used by Remington Arms to manufacture and test munitions, including during the Civil War and both World Wars. Today, plans for the property envision a dramatically different future.

Clean Energy Supporting Conservation

Under the proposed project, approximately 51 acres of the property will be used for solar panels and battery energy storage, while the broader site will become a major nature preserve.

Plans for Remington Woods include a natural science center, outdoor classroom, student viewing platform, and extensive conservation areas. The property is expected to eventually be transferred to a conservation steward and protected through a conservation easement.

The renewable energy components are also designed to help financially support the park’s long-term operation. Revenue from the solar and battery energy storage projects should help fund the preserve, with project planners estimating that the park’s fund could grow to approximately $50 million over the next three decades.

The solar component could begin generating electricity as early as the end of 2027, while the battery energy storage portion is expected to follow later in the decade.
